What are Grinders?

What are Grinders?

Spread, meat, cheese, and maybe some lettuce and tomatoes, or any of your favorite toppings—layer them together in between two slices of bread and you got yourself a sandwich. However, the name you call it changes once you swap the bread for a long thick roll.

In our sandwich shop in Fairfield, Connecticut, we call these grinders. Grinders are one of the many types of sandwiches. This variation is popular among New Englanders and can be served warm or cold. Other than cold cuts and cheese, there could be meatballs or sliced chicken breast.

“Why is it called a grinder?”, you might ask. Well, you’ve come to the right place! Wich Day is not your typical catering services in Connecticut! We donned on our investigative hat and figured it out for you.

Some say it’s from an Italian-American slang for dockworkers—or those who were often seen in the docks standing and grinding rusty hulls for repainting. However, it most likely comes from the fact that you need to grind your teeth into these sandwiches because they’re harder to chew than the regular ones.

While it is unclear where the term came from, one thing is for sure: our grinders are made fresh everyday and guaranteed to satisfy you with every bite. You’re in for a treat as you create your own.
